How Do Dental Implants Work?

Dental implants allow us to replace your missing teeth with customizable, long-lasting new models. The actual dental implants, also called posts, are slender titanium screws that are gently inserted into your jawbone to create an artificial version of the root of a natural tooth. Once your implants have firmly integrated into your jaw, we can top them with individual porcelain crowns, bridges, or even dentures to provide an elegant, functional new look. Dental implants themselves can last for a lifetime with proper care, and the crowns on top often need only be replaced once every decade or more, so you can count on implants as a long-term solution.

What Are Single Implants?

Single implants are the standard kind of dental implant. In this approach, an individual dental implant is inserted into your jaw where each missing tooth used to be. After a roughly four-month period of recovery during which time the implants will mesh with your jaw bone — a process known as osseointegration — each implant will be topped with a custom-made porcelain crown that can be designed to your exact specifications and can give you back not just your smile but a fresh, new appearance.

What Are Implant-Supported Bridges?

We can also use dental implants to create what are called implant-supported bridges. A newer take on the traditional dental bridge, implant-supported bridges use dental implants to support bridges or rows of crowns that have been fused together to fill in larger gaps in your smile. Using implants helps us hold the bridge in place more firmly, creating more reliable, stable, and long-lasting results.

How Long Do Dental Implants Take?

The dental implant process typically takes at least six months. This is because getting implants requires at least one, if not several, dental surgical procedures, each of which also requires recovery time. However, the results tend to be spectacular and can last for decades with proper care.
